IITD National Training Awards 2010![]() The IITD National Training Awards 2010 took place on the 26th March 2010. Keen focus on innovation and evaluation to ensure the organisation delivers on linking the training function to overall company strategy secures top honours for Cordis Johnson & Johnson at the National Training Awards 2010. Cordis Johnson & Johnson has secured the top prize at this year’s National Training Awards. Based in Cashel, Cordis was named as Overall Winner at the annual Awards, run by the Irish Institute of Training & Development (IITD), in recognition of “their excellent commitment to learning and development by focussing on innovation and evaluation to ensure the organisation delivers on linking the training function to overall company strategy”. The company also received a Best Practice Initiative for their Corporate Social Responsibility Programme. The company faced competition from eight other category winners to secure the Award’s top honours. o A win in the Large Indigenous Organisation sector for Irish Life & Permanent, ‘In recognition of their focussed analysis of needs to meet the current market and organisational challenges and the systematic and innovative approach to learning and development at all levels’
o A Best Practice Initiative Award for UCC for their ‘No Frontiers Programme’. This programme was put together by the HR Department with the International Education Office to respond to the growing diversity of staff and students in the university. Over the course of three workshops, participants learnt about different cultures and religions, the adjustment of teaching methods to suit a more international classroom and how to improve working relationships or service provision to people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
o A win for Fingal County Council in the public sector category ‘In recognition of the development of in-house capability to be innovative and to generate efficiencies through training’.
o A win for Dr Orna Tighe in the Learner of the Year Category. Dr Orna Tighe chose a quality improvement project as her assessment project for an MSc in Leadership & Management as part of her ongoing professional development. In doing so, she drew upon her knowledge of the examinations process and applied a philosophy of continuous process improvement. The changes have been incorporated into the RCSI examinations standard operating procedures.
Speaking at the awards, Sinead Heneghan, Director, Irish Institute of Training & Development said “a key component shared by all our winners this year, and by our overall winner Cordis Johnson & Johnson in particular, was their demonstration both of the tangible returns achieved from their HRD and training programmes, and the key role the training and development (T&D) function is playing in helping them, above all, to adapt, change and compete in the current recession”.
“Irish Companies, large and small, who undertake training - management training in particular - give themselves every chance to compete in the extremely challenging global economy we currently inhabit. Where there is ongoing development of employees, evidence emerges of the achievement of higher added value to products and services through increased quality and productivity. Recognition in these Awards raises standards for all and keeps organisations on track for continuous improvement” concluded Ms Heneghan, IITD.
Now in their 12th year, the IITD National Training Awards aim to recognise organisations, which demonstrate best practice and an ongoing commitment to training & developing their people. For participants, the Awards are an opportunity to benchmark their training and development programmes in real terms. Behind every successful National Training Award entry is a compelling business story, both about the benefits to be derived from investing in people and the recognition of the T&D function as a key driver of organisation performance in modern Irish businesses.
Entries are judged on criteria including the level of resource and investment in training & development activity relative to the size of the organisation; innovative developments in the delivery of T&D; evidence of the sustainability of T&D initiatives and the evaluation of tangible business and organisational benefits achieved through T&D.
The IITD is the professional association representing training and HRD (human resource development) professionals in Ireland. The Institute has over 1,600 members across all sectors of industry – private, public, voluntary and community - in the training and HRD profession.
